  Do you want to understand the basics of what has been found in the world of physics lately?  Carlo Rovelli manages to guide the common reader through a maze of outwardly complicated physical theories and concepts that have shaped the way we perceive the universe in the last century, in a short and concise 1-hour read. The chapters are very short and cover huge chunks of 20th century physics in each of them (lesson one covers Special and General Relativity theory in 10 pages, second lesson Quantum Physics in 9, and so forth). But what's special about this read is its simplicity. You do not get in-depth understanding of the matters, but Rovelli's paints you the gist and summarises big topics in easy relatable terms. It supplies you with food for thought. And it is beautifully written. And inspiring. In February 2020 I decided that it was time to read one of the pillars of the western literature: "War and Peace" (Leo Tolstoi). To make things even more challenging, I decided to pick a new german translation (Barbara Conrad) that is exceptionally long (around 2300 pages). Coincidently, the corona crisis exploded in the time comprised between March and May 2020, so I spent many long evenings by myself threading through imaginary early 19th century frosty Russian landscapes. What can I write about it? Well, it was the intelectual equivalent to a marathon. It took me almost four and a half months (I generally read a 200 pages novel in a couple of evenings, if it is in Portuguese, English or Norwegian) and I felt I had to take a couple of breaks in between. I could read up to 30-35 pages/hour, if concentrated, so you can imagine how long it takes to read 2300 pages at this pace. By the end, I was exhausted. The last 500 pages were slow. Jeg har holdt en mening i de siste ukene/måneder som de fleste av mine venner er uenig i. Men saker som dette i lenken under bare forsterker meningen at det er ikke gitt at det er demokratenes representant som blir den neste POTUS i 2020.  I denne artikkelen fra NRK kommenteres om hvordan de nye sosialdemokratiske stemmene innad i det demokratiske partiet i USA blir oppfattet av store skarer i det amerikanske samfunnet. Forslagene og kommentarene til kandidater som Bernie Sanders kan høres helt fornuftig ut for europeiske tilhørere, men de blir fort stemplet som altfor radikale for en gjennomsnittlig amerikansk velger. Tallene fra meningsmålerne i de siste månedene har vist at grepet Trump har på kjernevelgere i det republikanske partiet har blitt mer solide i løpet av sin regjeringstid. "Ivanhoe" is one of the first historic novels ever written, so this one has been on my wish list for a long time. It is a very entertaining read, both for children and adults alike. It takes you back to 12th century England, and both Robin Hood, John Lackland and Richard Lionheart are active characters in the story. The style is slightly moralising, to the point of being anachronistic for todays sensibilities, and the reader gets the impression that everything is going to end well (whatever that means!), which it does. The language of the original is thick (Walter Scott tried to recreate medieval English, while using 19th century novel narrative style), so if you do not have English as your mother tongue, it could be easier to read a translation (I read it in Norwegian and most of the heaviness of the original is, fortunately or not, lost). " The Shortest History of Germany " (James Hawes) har en fristende tittel for alle som er interessert i europeisk eller tysk historie. Og i de første tre kapitlene leverer den. Forfatteren har delt boka i fire deler, hvor hver av dem dekker cirka fem århundrer av tysk historie. Det begynner mer eller mindre i romersk keisertid og avslutter i dag (boka ble gitt ut seint i 2017). De første tre delene er informativ og lettleselig, og til og med potensielle lesere uten noen nevneverdig kunnskapsbakgrunn i verken europeisk eller tysk historie kan lese den uten problemer. Hele boka tar en eller to dager å lese. Forfatteren er flink å formidle og forklare forholdet mellom Romerriket og de tyske stammene på andre siden av Rhinen, og han er forholdsvis nyansert i beskrivelsen av europeiske forhold etter Romerrikets oppløsning (og faktorene som bidro til det).  Problemene starter når man kommer til Reformasjonstiden.
